POM Hipoksiyi Nasıl Önler?

Hypoxia — the condition of the body in which the tissues are starved of oxygen — accounts for 60% of all complications and/or deaths during conscious sedation procedures. While sedation does not directly cause hypoxia, hypoxic events can occur due to inadequate oxygen.

Prior to the Procedural Oxygen Mask™ (POM), clinicians were cutting holes into masks to allow probes and tubes to enter standard O2 masks during various types of endoscopy procedures to increase oxygen and reduce interruptions.

These types of alterations can still cause hypoxia, creating a greater issue for procedural interruptions, and could pose liability issues by cutting / modifying medical devices. We saw a need and created a solution that we want to share with CRNAs, anesthesiologists, and hospitals everywhere. Learn how The POM can prevent hypoxia and improve your ability to best care for your patients.

Endoscopy Mask That Helps Prevent Hypoxia

With The POM, we developed the concept of patented modifiable membranes onto a O2 mask that is fitted directly over the nose and mouth. This allows the tube or probe to safely enter a patient’s oral or nasal passage while keeping the patient highly oxygenated during the procedure.

The POM provides sensitive and dependable EtCo2 trends that allow you, the clinician, to intervene proactively in real time to prevent hypoxia.

Endoscopy Mask for Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Procedures

The POM allows for an unobstructed, 360 degree view of the area behind the mask and optimal access to the patient during procedures. With The POM’s ability to provide ultimate access to the patient’s nose or mouth while monitoring end-tidal CO2, and providing high FiO2 percentages, we reduce the risk of hypoxia during upper EGD.

It maximizes the FiO2 to the patient, providing a buffer or bank of oxygen. This extra bank of oxygen assists with:

  • Increasing apnea detection time.
  • Increasing intervention time to re-optimize the patient.
  • Decreasing interruptions during the procedure.
  • Decreasing adverse events and mortality.

Reduction in adverse hypoxic related events can and will help you as the clinician avoid unnecessary intervention.

Endoscopy Masks That Can Be Used After Patient Recovery

Finally, The POM is ideal for patient recovery as it can be used for post-op care, which reduces cost and the need for additional oxygen therapy devices. The POM membranes have a self-healing nature that forms back to a closing state, hence maintaining prescribed oxygen levels during patient recovery.

Prevent Hypoxia with the POM

60% of all adverse events during conscious sedation are hypoxia related events. The POM increases the patient’s blood oxygen content, providing a buffer and increasing intervention time to protect the patient from hypoxic events. It offers higher oxygen (>85% FiO2) delivery rates as opposed to the nasal cannula (~35% FiO2) oxygen delivery rate.

The Procedural Oxygen Mask is becoming the standard of care for all upper endoscopy procedures under conscious sedation. Contact us directly to speak with us about case studies, resources, and benefits of The POM, and improve care for your patients instantly.
